Ben and Liam have been friends for more than five years. Recently, they decided to raise money for their top surgeries together. Putting yourself out there is a lot easier with your friend by your side because you get that extra confidence in yourself. Plus, it’s nice to have someone in your corner.
Liam has his own entertainment business, Scissor Sisters, which hosts two Pride Daze events a year; a New Years Eve event and a Pride event. This is the third year he will be hosting during Pride and since he makes some profit from the events, he thought that money should go to a cause: his and Ben’s top surgery fund.
Pride Daze III will be taking place on Friday June 12 at The Handsome Daughter, which is a safe space, fully accessible and will have gender neutral washrooms available. The event will also be featuring two local queer DJs, DJ Jackson and DJ Andy_2_K. It is important to Ben and Liam to promote local queer talent as they all support each other. The DJs are also their friends, so they’re supporting pals as well.
A lot of people have been supportive of the two wanting to get top surgery, both people from the GLBT community and even people they don’t know. Together, they are hoping to raise $9,000. Each will get $4,500 as a portion of the money needed for surgery. The other half they will contribute themselves. “It’s important to put something of ourselves into the surgery,” said Liam.
They have a GoFundMe campaign that you can donate, but there has been some negative feedback from people. They are taking that negativity and turning it positive; they will be donating $1,000, no matter how much they end up raising, towards buying binders for people in the community who don’t have access to them.
Advanced tickets for the event are now on sale and will also be available at the door. What better way to start off the Pride weekend by supporting two of the community members and attending an amazing event?
